The Pond Digger Podcast

Mar 5, 2021

It’s just about springtime which means it’s the perfect time to take stock and clean things up. Eric today has Leslie on the podcast with him to cover four principles for pond care that are important to do each year for some Spring cleaning. Think of it like giving your pond a much-needed annual physical!

Eric and Leslie share their insight on:

  • Evaluating your livestock: How the needs of your fish change over time and why older (bigger) fish impact your pond differently than younger (smaller fish) and how breeding fish can end up impacting water quality (a pond can only hold so many fish).
  • Water treatment evaluation: How a strict water treatment regimen can sometimes go overboard and require correction to keep everything balanced. Additionally, there are nuances and seasonal/occasional elements to pond maintenance that can be overlooked.
  • Evaluating what your fish are fed: The importance of tracking data, such as the amount of fish food consumed annually, to help you know what’s going on in your pond and what’s changing. Why fish need a healthy diet, just like people. And how fish need different nutrients at different times of the year, so fish food should change seasonally.
  • Life Support Inspection: Why draining is important to be able to really see the skimmer, pump, and water filtration systems and make sure everything is working properly. And how it’s worth it to pay a professional to inspect your equipment once a year.
  • Why you must pay attention to these four pond essentials annually or you may have serious problems developing in your pond that you don’t know about.
